Sonder Press is an independent publisher of fiction and narrative nonfiction.  We publish short fiction and essay collections, as well as full-length works.  We also hold an annual chapbook competition, open to both fiction and narrative nonfiction. Sister to our press, The Sonder Review, is a biannual publication of short fiction, creative nonfiction and visual art, living both online and in print.

We believe in the profundity of the written word and the necessity of paper beneath your fingertips.  We believe in language.  Words raw and shuddering and unabashed. We seek well-written, engaging works of prose with a penchant for language.  Writing which has been crafted with care and precision; which attends to detail and astonishes sensibility.  Narratives which provoke and pursue.  We wish to be transported, rearranged and awakened; to feel the weight of every word.  We want distinct visions rendered in piercing prose. Storytelling which is thoughtfully wrought and delicately vibrant – which throbs the gut and burns the throat; which brings the peculiar, the off-angles and edges, to light; which leave us breathless and aching, shivering with the resplendent, churning pulse of human experience.

We believe incredibly strongly in our authors and take immense pride in bringing their vision to fruition.  We also do our best to promote their voices and nominate their work for applicable awards and prizes.

The Best Small Fictions is the first ever contemporary anthology solely dedicated to anthologizing the best short hybrid fiction published in a given calendar year. Best Small Fictions features micro fiction, flash fiction, haibun stories and prose poetry. Founded by Tara L. Masih, Best Small Fictions is now helmed by series editor Nathan Leslie. Guest editors have included Pulitzer Prize-winning Robert Olen Butler (2015), PEN/Malamud Award winner Stuart Dybek (2016), Pen/Malamud Award winner Amy Hempel (2017) and two-time Pushcart Prize winner Aimee Bender (2018).

Editors are encouraged to send their five best works of flash and micro fiction, haibun stories and prose poems published in 2019. Submissions open November 12th, 2019 and run until January 10th, 2020. We encourage an eclectic array of styles and approaches. We love work featuring memorable imagery, characterization and language.

Submissions should be within 1000 words, however this is an approximate guideline and we ask editors to use their own discretion. Submissions may be submitted as word documents, pdfs, or links to the published work.

The Sonder Press Chapbook Competition is held annually and open to new, emerging, and established writers of both short fiction and narrative nonfiction.  Submissions close December 31st of each year and re-open January 1st

Submission information:

We want more than a simple narrative, more than recounting of events; we want prose which provokes and stirs us, which forces us to pause and take note.  Pieces delicately and thoughtfully constructed. We are looking for language driven writing crafted with a precise hand; lines so lovely we find ourselves saying them aloud.  Give us language to unpackage, deft words and ringing voices. We want the everyday events, the quiet moments: the profound pulse of human experience.  We want the peculiar, the off-angles and edges; the distinctive writing and unique voices which drive us.

For a more expansive sense of what we are looking for, please peruse our back issues and blog.

Writers may submit up to two original and previously unpublished works of short fiction and/or creative nonficition, no more than 5,000 words in length.  We do accept simultaneous submissions but ask to be notified immediately if the work you’ve submitted has been accepted elsewhere.

Please submit only .doc or .docx file formats.

The Sonder Review acquires First North American Serial Rights for each piece accepted for publication, after which all copyrights revert back to the author.  We do ask to be acknowledged in any future re-printings or publications.

Each author whose work is selected to appear in The Sonder Review will receive one complimentary printed copy of the issue in which their work appears.
